Yorkshire Brewery Collingwood: Apartment for sale inside tower

An apartment at 501A/2 Mansard Lane, inside Collingwood’s famed Yorkshire Brewery tower, is for sale.

A full-floor apartment in Collingwood’s historic Yorkshire Brewery tower — once Melbourne’s tallest building — is set to have buyers frothing.

The two-bedroom pad is for sale, with a $950,000-$1 million price guide, for the first time since it was converted inside the 1876-built landmark in 2015.

Jellis Craig Fitzroy partner Simon Shrimpton said the vendors bought the 501A/2 Mansard Lane property off the plan after it was fitted out by the developer to retain the building’s original arched windows, exposed brickwork and 3.8m-high ceilings.

501A/2 Mansard Lane occupies the entire fifth floor of the historic tower.

The apartment features a covered balcony.

“This is the first resale in the tower — they’ve been rather tightly held since 2015,” Mr Shrimpton said.

The Victorian Heritage Database stated the Yorkshire brewery was established in 1858 by John Wood, who initially ran it out of a timber building near the Yorkshire Hotel, which he also owned.

Mr Wood’s architect son, James, designed the present complex in 1875, with its foundation stone laid the following year.

The apartment retains the building’s original arched windows and exposed brick.

The building was converted into homes in 2015.

The brick tower was the highlight of the complex, crowned by a roof in French “Second Empire” architectural style, and standing 34m-high.

This made it Melbourne’s tallest building, and the crown of Collingwood’s thriving brewing scene, at the time.

Carlton and United bought the brewery in 1909. It was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register in 1990 and recently restored as part of a $220 million development by SMA Projects.

Mr Shrimpton said the brew tower was a landmark “not only for Collingwood, but Melbourne”, and had “undergone a full restoration” that had even made it earthquake proof.

He said the apartment on the market — on the fifth of six floors in the tower — featured windows on all four sides, ensuring it was flooded with natural light.

    The apartment features two bedrooms.

It also has lift access, courtesy of a tower that ran up the southern side of the building, and secure parking.

The open-plan living and dining area features dark oak floors and a marble kitchen filled with Miele appliances. It opens out to a covered alfresco terrace.

Two bedrooms, a bathroom and laundry complete the pad, which is being eyed by professional couples and singles, and downsizers.

The property’s expressions of interest campaign closes July 13.
