The Block 2024 episode 37 recap: A basic games room and new entry has losers turning on winners

It’s the moment Nine have been teasing for a week — Kylie’s big walk out.

Promos have shown her throwing her toys out of the pram after judges pointed out her and Brad’s rumpus and extra living space were two of the most nonsensical and uncomfortable rooms created on this season of The Block.

So, does she flee back to Cairns dragging a reluctant Brad behind her? Well, no. She threatens to, drives Brad to tears and despair, sulks in the car for a while and then keeps going.

The woman is thinner skinned than Elon Musk.

Kylie tells Brad she’s walking off the show.

To be fair, the judges have been reasonably nasty this season, but in the case of Kylie and Brad’s strange office/royal box hybrid they were justified.

And she seems to have completely forgotten the raves she got for their kitchen and dining room just a week ago.

Still, their comments have Kylie wondering what she’s doing here, away from her young kids, who the pair haven’t seen since the show began 10 weeks ago.

“The feedback was brutal, savage,” she says. “I just want to see my kids and when you’re told all this negative feedback I’m like ‘what are we doing?’ Family is more valuable than this s..thole. F*** me.”

She’s also fuming the girls were given permission to replace an upstairs window with a door and spiral staircase, giving separate access to their mezzanine level, allowing it to be used as a self-contained apartment for short term rentals or guests.

Kylie tells the other contestants she and Brad considered doing something similar but were told that would mean re-engineering the upper level.

The other teams meet to bag out the girls.

“That was a decision we had to have locked in in the first four weeks before the girls even got here so it’s funny that they were allowed to change,” she points out.

As we’ve seen so many times before on the show, it’s left to Brad to try and cajole and tip toe through the minefield of Kylie’s moods, but this time he’s at breaking point over it too.

“I know you want to leave and you deserve to but I can’t do this without you,” he weeps. “We’ve worked so hard for this. Do we not deserve a chance to win money? It’s the whole reason we came here. It’s the only thing that makes any of this worth it.”

Kylie seemingly comes to her senses, to an extent. The pair head to choose tiles but Kylie tells Brad she’s just going to paint their laundry and final bedroom black then disappears to stew in the car leaving him to it.

While the co-winners Charlotte and Maddy and Ricky and Haydn are bonding at a fancy winners’ dinner with Scott Cam and previous Block victors Omar and Oz, the losers gather to vent.

The losers dinner party turns on Ricky and Haydn and Maddy and Charlotte.

Tristian and Mimi and Courtney and Grant aren’t quite as furious as Kylie and Brad about last week’s judging, but they’re certainly not happy and this time it’s not just Charlotte and Maddy in their sights, it’s co-winners Ricky and Hayden too.

Grant is unimpressed with the boys’ admittedly pretty basic 10-scoring games room, saying that while it is possible to create a high-end version, this wasn’t one.

When Charlotte notices the plastic stools they’ve plonked near the retro video game, and the fact the pool cues would hit the stair balustrade, it’s hard to disagree.

Still, most of the teams agree Grant and Courtney had been shafted by the judges once again, being criticised for delivering an office in the space earmarked for an office, which the judges felt was unnecessary in a holiday house, and ill-placed on an open mezzanine where there was no privacy.

As Courtney, fairly reasonably put points out, “the most frustrating part was we stuck to the brief and provided an office and we don’t think they wanted an office”.
