Time capsule home offers ‘a new first’

Take a step back in time.

A ‘cosy’ two-bedroom terrace that last traded for £5400 in 1963 opposite the exclusive new Surry Hills Village has a lofty price guide.

Now with a $1.8m price guide for a February 8 auction, the home at 18 Marriott St, Redfern is like a time capsule from the 1960s and ‘70s with its rounded archways, lace curtains and retro interiors.

As the realestate.com.au ad suggests, this is now a “Character Gem in a Sought-After Vibrant Location”, but that wasn’t always the case with Redfern terraces.

There’s a “neat and bright kitchen” and “cosy dining area”.

Brand new terraces in the Surry Hills Village on the other side of the street are selling with $4m price guides and the sales agent for this terrace, Mark Foy of McGrath Surry Hills, recently sold a south-facing penthouse in the new complex for $7.35m to a couple from Bellevue Hill.

“Who would have thought that we’d be selling $7m penthouses in Redfern, but this is a great development,” said Foy.

“We’ve got a big new Coles and a Harris Farm, and we’ve seen this before at St Margarets [in Surry Hills] and Ikon in Potts Point — prices go up nearby.

“The owners of this terrace are Greek, so they love having the new Olympus Greek restaurant just footsteps away from them.”

All but 13 of the 122 apartments at Surry Hills Village have now sold.

The terrace is the first in the row to come up for sale since the Surry Hills Village apartment development was completed.

Records show the terrace, with its “neat and bright kitchen” and “cosy dining area”, was inherited by the current owner in 2011.

It’s the first home in the strip of terraces opposite the new project to come onto the market since it was completed, though a rundown home around the corner recently sold for $2.5m.

“We’re getting good interest in this so far,” says Foy.

18 Marriott St, Redfern has a $1.8m price guide.

“We had 18 groups through the open home on the weekend and we’ve had 30 inquiries.

Those interested include developers and young couples looking to renovate the terrace on the deep 187 sqm block. “You could potentially go up, add another level,” he adds.
