With freezing temperatures projected to hit Texas in the coming days, the Insurance Council of Texas is offering instruction on how residents can prepare for and handle winter weather, ensuring their homes and vehicles are ready.
Key issues affecting Texans during winter weather include:
- Frozen Pipes: Hard freezes can lead to bursting pipes, causing costly water damage.
- Icy Roads: Driving on snow and ice increases the risk of accidents.
- Heating Hazards: Portable heaters and fireplaces, while effective, can be dangerous if not used properly.
ICT advices taking these steps to prepare for the freezing temperatures to come.
- Protect Your Pipes:
- Disconnect outdoor hoses, insulate pipes, and drip at least one sink.
- Keep your thermostat at 55°F or warmer.
- Immediately shut off your home’s water supply and contact a plumber if a leak occurs.
- Drive Safely in Cold Weather:
- Equip your car with cold-weather essentials like blankets, a flashlight, and extra food and water.
- Avoid cruise control on icy roads, drive slowly, and increase your following distance.
- Prevent Heating Hazards:
- Keep flammable items three feet away from heat sources.
- Plug only one heat-producing appliance into an outlet at a time.
