How owners turned a Geelong home into a bayside stunner

Occupying a premium waterfront position on Geelong’s Corio Bay, this double-storey, updated period home with bay views, as the vendor puts it: “speaks for itself”.

“The house is elevated to take in the views without interruption. The hedge provides a privacy screen from the street and a beautiful green frame for the view,” he says.

The owners purchased the circa 1915 home at 24 Western Beach Rd, Geelong, via an online auction at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

24 Western Beach Rd, Geelong is listed with $6.5m price hopes.

The main living room celebrates the home’s original charms and position.

The home offers an uninterrupted view across parkland to Corio Bay.

Jellis Craig, Geelong agent Marcus Falconer has listed the home with price hopes of $6.5m.

The home has been meticulously renovated, including rewiring, restumping, relining, recladding, and replastering.

The upper level was also rebuilt.

“The architecture of a federation house appealed to us initially, however, the original rooms were quite small and did not show off the 3m high ceilings.

“Therefore, we needed to remove walls to get the proportions correct to match the high ceilings and the need for spacious modern living,” the vendor says.

A standout of the renovation is the designer kitchen with reconstituted marble countertops, an island bench with a breakfast bar, stainless-steel appliances, a porcelain sink, and abundant storage, including banks of black, soft-close cupboards and drawers and a pantry with a second sink.

Black cabinets contrast the white colour scheme in the kitchen.

The kitchen has a large Smeg stove and heaps of storage.

The main bedroom has a window seat overlooking the waterfront.

The property offers a great vantage to all the activities around the water.

Importantly, many original federation period features remain untouched.

This includes the leadlight window and doors, the timber feature above the main loungeroom bay window, pressed metal ceilings and cornices, western red cedar ceilings, Baltic pine floorboards, large skirtings, and timber panel doors.

“Our family team members have over 35 years of construction and architectural experience,” the vendor said.

“This allowed for an integrated design that was sympathetic to the original period and was constructed in such a way that the character was not compromised.”

Downstairs, the two lounge rooms, a formal dining room, and a family zone with a living and casual dining area are where some of the vendor’s most cherished memories occurred.

    There are large living spaces.

Stacking doors connect the living space to a rear outdoor area.

The bathroom is another stunning room.

“We had big family lunches … the large formal dining room has easy access to the kitchen through a double swing door making it a combination between formal and informal,” he says.

But it’s the location that is cited by the vendor as one of the biggest drawcards of the property.

“The City of Greater Geelong has successfully redeveloped the waterfront to support numerous activities and events.

“We are in the middle of it all, watching the Around the Bay in a Day, Cadel Evans race, Revival Cars, markets.

“Both summer and winter there is plenty to do. Everyone drives to this location to enjoy the views while they walk, ride, and picnic.

“We just step out our front door.”
