Michigan DIFS Urges Residents to Review Insurance Policies

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is encouraging Michiganders to carefully review and understand their existing insurance policies with a licensed insurance agent or trusted advisor, and to shop around to ensure the best coverage to protect their families at affordable costs.

“Reviewing and understanding your insurance policies is a key step in being prepared, and shopping around can help ensure you have the insurance coverage that best fits your family’s needs and budget,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “A licensed insurance agent can help guide you through the process, and DIFS is ready to assist Michiganders who have questions about auto, home, or life insurance policy options and can be reached Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 877-999-6442, or by visiting Michigan.gov/DIFS.”

Insurance affects nearly every aspect of life for Michigan consumers, making it essential to understand your policies to ensure they fit your needs. During Reading Month, Michiganders should be sure to review their insurance policies, including:

      • Homeowners and Renters Insurance: A thorough review of your homeowners or renters insurance policy will help you to understand your existing coverage. Shop around for insurance options that provide coverage for you and your family at an affordable cost. Make sure you are financially comfortable with the amount of your deductible as this is the amount you are responsible for paying when a claim is filed.
      • Auto Insurance: It is important to ensure you are adequately covered in the event of an auto accident. This means reviewing your current coverages, including collision and comprehensive, to ensure you have the coverage that best meets your needs. Consumers should shop around to compare costs from different insurers to find the right coverage for their family and budget. In addition, consumers should ensure that family members who opt out of or are excluded from Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical coverage have the required Qualified Health Coverage (QHC). Otherwise, they may be left without medical coverage in the event of an auto accident. Additional information is available at Michigan.gov/AutoInsurance.
