Buyers lock in move to Geelong after snapping up renovated Californian bungalow

Interstate buyers have snapped up a renovated Californian bungalow in a Geelong immediately after seeing it in person for the first time.

The three-bedroom character home at 71 Carr St sold for $920,000.

McGrath, Geelong agent David Cortous said the New South Wales buyers had seen the property online when it was initially listed in February, but only moved to purchase after seeing it in the flesh.

71 Carr St, Geelong, sold for $920,000.

The central kitchen has skylights to draw in plenty of natural light.

“They didn’t get down until last weekend and bought it on the spot,” Mr Cortous said.

The sale locked in a $380,000 increase in value in four and a half years following a renovation to the original home that last sold in 2020 for $540,000.

“It was renovated nicely and was obviously central to Geelong,” Mr Cortous said.

A treasure trove of old fittings and fixtures squirrelled away in a garden shed gives a lot of character to the eclectic nature of the renovation to the character home.

The sellers put original architraves and fretwork back in place, along with repurposing mid-century cabinetry that formed part of a 1950s bungalow addition to the home – now concerted into a main bedroom suite and parents’ retreat and home office.

“There was this little shed out the back and it had all this beautiful woodwork that had been stripped out and taken out over the years so we just installed it back in,” the vendor told the Addy earlier.

Bright spaces shine throughout the home.

Cabinetry from a mid-century addition has been retained in the home office.

An open fireplace is the centrepiece of the outdoor entertainment area.

Light and bright spaces blend modern inclusions with heritage touches throughout the house.

A corner fireplace, picture rails and timber fretwork are retained in the front lounge room that flows through into a crisp white kitchen with modern stainless steel appliances and skylights overhead.

A cast iron pot belly heater sourced from Tasmania features in the adjoining dining room which enjoys a northerly aspect and garden view.

Another updated bathroom with a claw foot bath services the two front bedrooms, both with built-in storage.

A three-car rear garage has high ceilings designed to allow for the installation of mezzanine where the vendor had planned to eventually set up an art studio.

The property, which is directly opposite the Geelong to Waurn Ponds train line, is a five-minute walk to South Geelong train station.
