$1.3 Million Homes in Costa Brava, Spain

Originally built in the 1230s, this eight-bedroom home, called Masía de Vilert, is in the Pla de l’Estany region of Girona, a rural area popular for hiking, cycling, and its archaeological museum. The property sits in the hamlet of Vilert, on the south bank of the Fluvià River. The hamlet is anchored by the church of Santa Maria de Vilert, which dates from the ninth century and is protected as a “cultural asset of local interest” by the Inventory of Catalan Cultural Heritage. Vilert is seven miles from Banyoles, the capital of the county, with a population of about 20,000. It is 22 miles from L’Escala and 27 miles from Roses.

      Size: 5,619 square feet

      Price per square foot: $248

Indoors: The eight-bedroom, eight-bathroom home was renovated in 2007 but retained historic features including 300-year-old wooden floors in some places, a 700-year-old fireplace, a Gothic window, a secret staircase, Catalan vaulted ceilings, stone walls and wooden beams. It also has updates such as a soundproof recording studio, a Lacanche range in the country-style eat-in kitchen, and designer electrical switches (handmade by Fontini) and fixtures throughout.

One section of the house sets off three bedrooms and two bathrooms, offering privacy from the other five bedrooms. The main level includes the common spaces, with several sitting and dining areas accessed through archways or small flights of stairs.

Outdoor space: The property has about 2,150 square feet of outdoor space, including a brick courtyard with a swimming pool, a covered dining area and a brick oven, as well as a terrace with panoramic views.

Costs: The annual property tax is $972 (€900) and trash collection is $186 (€172).
