‘Best view’: Rare chance to snag local icon’s prized beachfront home

A beachfront unit held by the family of local identity Col Smith for about 40 years has come to market for the first time.

The Currumbin apartment, located in the Fletcher building at 738 Pacific Parade, was the pick of the building when it was commissioned by Col Smith and built in 1975.

Mr Smith was president of the Currumbin Beach Progress Association and other community organisations.

His father, Tom Smith, developed several buildings in the suburb, including the first surf clubhouse on Elephant Rock.

LJ Hooker Southern Gold Coast marketing agent Erin King said the Smith family retained Unit 4 until 2017, when it was purchased off market by another owner in the complex for $711,000.

The two-bedroo unit will go under the hammer next month

The two-bedroom, one-bathroom unit will go under the hammer on May 2.

“Col Smith recognised the unique beauty of Currumbin Beach,” Ms King said.

“Fletcher is positioned on a bend in Pacific Parade which offers views to Surfers Paradise’s skyline and south to Snapper Rocks.

“Unit 4 was the last of the properties the family owned on Currumbin Beach because the Smiths believed it had the best view in the suburb – maybe even the entire Gold Coast.”

Mrs King said the property’s unmatched position on one of Australia’s favourite coastal strips and panoramic 180-degree views would attract a strong turnout when the property goes to auction, if not sold prior.

“The unit is located opposite the iconic Elephant Rock and Currumbin Surf Club on

Currumbin Beach and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said.

“The balcony, living area and bedrooms all enjoy the most stunning views.

“The unit has a retro, beachy vibe which draws in the coastal scenery from almost every corner.

“Currumbin has some of the Gold Coast’s best suburban cafes and the Surf Club is a hive of activity for families.”

The unit has been rented between 2017 and 2023 at between $630 and $750 a week, property records show.

The Smith family’s contribution to the local community was recognised by Gold Coast City Council through a viewing deck named in Col’s honour on the Currumbin Oceanway. Fittingly, the deck sits in full view from Unit 4’s balcony.

PropTrack data shows Currumbin unit prices were up 6.7 per cent over the past 12 months to a median of $950,000.
